Abstract

Brake lining is one component of the vehicle that serves to extend or stop the vehicle in a comfortable manner. The study object was made as an alternative material for brake lining on airplanes, because of the difficulty and length of time to get the aircraft brake linings that have low wear properties and resistant to heat. The calcium carbonate of the eggshells is suitable as the criteria as an ingredient that has a melting point of 825oC and has good physical properties, such as having low porosity and fine particles. The particle shape of eggshells is round with a smooth surface, that it is very good for workability. Therefore the author tried to raise the problem of this eggshell waste for brake pad reinforcement. The material used in this study was eggshells powder, aluminium powder, and epoxy resin as the matrix. The making of this brake lining is done by mixing all the ingredients and printing with a 5 ton load. The tests carried out include wear and hardnees tests. The brake lining material in this study was tested with variations in material content presented in the flowchart of the test. The most optimal composition is close to the standard airplane brake lining in dry conditions, that is in variation 3 with 40% chicken egg shell powder, 20% aluminum powder, 40% epoxy resin with a wear value of 0.0234 mm2/kg. Meanwhile, in most optimum composition in wet conditions is at variation 2 that consists of 30% chicken egg shell powder, 30% aluminum powder, 40% epoxy resin with 0.0290 mm2/kg wear value and a standard value of aircraft brake lining wear for 0.028 mm2/kg.
