Abstract

The increase number of vehicles, especially two wheelers causes pollution in the air, especially Hydro Carbon (H) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) as the result of combustion in motor vehicles. One way to reduce the level of emissions is to add a Catalytic Converter to the exhaust gas channel. This study was carried out by installing a Catalytic Converter made from charcoal on the Yamaha Vixion 150 cc 2008 which aims to determine the variations effect in the number of holes in the Catalytic Converter using coconut shell charcoal on exhaust gas absorption. Catalytic Converter consists of 3 variations of the hole numbers, which is 2 holes with diameter of 4 mm with a length of 43 mm, 4 holes with diameter of 4 mm with a length of 21.5 mm and 8 holes with diameter of 4 mm with a length of 10.75 mm. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that there is an effect on the use of activated carbon in the exhaust channel onmotorcycles in the form of reducing CO and HCemissions produced by motorcycles. Based on the emission test results it is possible that the longer the Catalytic Converter of activated carbon is used, it is possible that the concentration of CO and HC flue gases measured by the gas analyzer will also decrease. The biggest reduction in CO and HC levels is when using Catalytic Converters with 4mm of diameter and 2 holes with a length of 43 mm at 4000 rpm. The CO levels decreased by 75.3% and the HC concentrations decreased by 65.6%
