Abstract

Friction stir welding is an advance in the field of friction welding. Friction stir welding has the opportunity to become a welding process that will be used in the future. One of its uses is as a substitute for the rivet method on the plate shaped material. In the world of aviation this method can be used to connect aircraft fuselage skin material. This study focused on analyzing the effect of angular variations in the tapered probe on friction stir welding joints on Al 2024- T3 material. The research method was carried out by a friction stir welding process using a feedrate of 20 mm / minute and angle variation of the probe 0 °, 3 ° and 6 ° with a plate-shaped specimen. Furthermore, the connection of aluminum material from the friction stir welding process was tested using tensile testing and macro photo testing. The results of the macro photo analysis do not show differences in the specimen variations in the tapered probe angle 0 ° with tapered probes 3 ° and 6 °. From the results of the tensile test that has been done for the ultimate tensile strength in the specimen using a 0 ° tapered angle probe at the weld nugget area. Specimens using tapered probes at 3 ° and 6 ° fail in the base material. In specimens of variation 0 ° the tensile strength value is 38.53% higher than the specimen value of 3 ° and 40.13% higher than the specimen value of 6 °.
