Abstract

The N219 amphibious aircraft is an aircraft designed to be able to operate in two conditions at once, namely on land and in water with additional float assistance. Float is an additional component that is useful for providing useful buoyancy to seaplanes. In this research, the float was composed of carbon twill fiber composite and vinyl ester resin using 2 (two) variations, namely those soaked and not soaked in sea water. So the aim of this research is to find out the weight results of carbon fiber composites that are soaked and not soaked in sea water and to find out the results of compressive strength tests on carbon fiber composites that are soaked and not soaked in sea water. This research uses the Vaccum Assisted Rein Infusion (VARI) method guided by the American Society Testing and Material (ASTM) D5229 and American Society Testing and Material (ASTM) D6641. So in this study it was found that the average result of the weight of composites 1-5 which were not soaked sequentially was 14.888 grams, while the average result of the weight of composites 1-5 which were soaked sequentially was 14.85 grams. And for the compressive strength test results, it was found that those with higher strength results in withstanding pressure were specimens not soaked in sea water.
