Abstract

Wing in Ground Effect Aircraft is a type of air transportation that is designed to fly sustainably at a relatively low altitude from the ground or water surface by utilizing ground effect. Ground effect is an increase in lift and a decrease in drag produced by wings when flying at a height not far from the surface of the ground or water. In this research, a simulation was carried out to determine the aerodynamic characteristics in the form of turbulence on the NACA 24112 airfoil by varying the angle of attack (AOA) and height against the influence of ground effect. This research uses a 2D Computational Fluid Dynamic based simulation method with a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulent model using Ansys Fluent software. The results obtained from this simulation are in the form of mean velocity, eddy vicosity, pressure contour and velocity contour values. Based on the research results, it shows that the turbulence that occurs on the NACA 24112 airfoil will be greater the farther the height from the ground. This is indicated by the eddy viscosity value at an angle of attack (AOA) 4o at height (h) = unbound at x/c 0.025. The higher the eddy viscosity value, the greater the mean velocity value also increases, so that the resulting lift coefficient (CL) value is also higher. Therefore, the lower the height of the airfoil relative to the ground and the greater the angle of attack (AOA), the lift coefficient (CL) value will be greater so that the lift force that occurs on the airfoil will also be greater. It is hoped that this research will be useful for considerations in designing Wing In Ground Effect (WIG) aircraft, so that the flying performance of an aircraft can be maximized.
