Abstract
A current technology is being seriously developed by various countries considering environmentally friendly factor. One of the examples is a composite that combines synthetic materials with natural materials as a constituent material, both synthetic matrix variations as a binder andnatural fibers as a reinforcing material which can be applied to the flying wing tail sitter component in the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). This research was conducted to identify the strength with variations in the volume fraction of coconut fiber and snake leaves fiber with a polyester matrix. The objects of this study were a composite of coconut fiber and snake leavesfiber with variations in the volume fraction of coconutfiber and snake leaves fiber (15%-5%, 15%-10%, and 15%-15%) using a polyester resin matrix and a catalyst. The test was carried out by tensile test and SEM. The method used in themanufacturing process is hand lay-up. The results of the tensile test can be concluded that the maximum tensile strength occurred in the volume fraction of cocofiber: snake leaves fiber (15%:15%) with a value of 15.102 N/mm2 .Meanwhile, the lowest tensile strength value was in the volume fraction of coco fiber: snake leaves fiber (15 %:5%) with a value of 7.533 N/mm2 . Based on the SEM test,it showed that in the volumefraction of coconut fiber: snake leaves fiber (15%:15%) there were voids and loose fibers in the composite material. Whereas in the volume fraction of coconut fiber: snake leaves fiber (15%:5%) there were voids, fiber detachment, and matrix cracking in the composite material. Therefore, the composite with the volume fraction of coco fiber: snake leaves fiber (15%:15%) met the standard tensile strength of the composite which could be used as an alternative for makingUAV wings flying wing tail sitters.
