Abstract

Antenna is one part of the transmitter block that is vital to the communication system for both High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF) communication lines and on the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) path. In the HF line, the most commonly used transmit rod antenna in all directions (Omnidirectional) is the 3/8 Ground Plane type λ which has limited range of radio signals emitted. The range of radio signals emitted can be enlarged by replacing the 3/8 Ground Plane antenna λ with Sigma 4 antenna type which has an antenna length of λ / 2 (with a wavelength which is the ideal antenna length). This study examines the performance of both the 3/8 λ Ground Plane antenna and Sigma 4 antenna that are applied to the HF communication line with a frequency limit of 26.965 MHz to 27.405 MHz. The method used was emitting radio signals at the test frequency using Centronik Mark II CB HF transmitter with alternating Omnidirectional antenna with Sigma 4 antenna then received by the Maycom AH27 receiver at a distance of 600 m, 1200 m and 2000m then observing the signal strength received using S digital meter. The results of this study indicate that the range of Sigma 4 antenna is better than the Ground Plane antenna at a distance of 600 m, 1200 m and 2000 m. The study was conducted on three different frequencies, namely 26.965 MHz, 27.125 MHz and 27.405 MHz which represented the range of frequencies tested. The best performance of Sigma 4 antenna is obtained at a test frequency of 27.125 MHz.
