Abstract

The one of communication system used on Boeing 737 NG aircraft is High Frequency (HF) communication which uses electromagnetic radio waves as a long distance communication with a frequency of 3 - 30 Mhz. One of the problems contained in the system is the occurrence of long tuning for more than 7 seconds which indicates the HF coupler fail. It could make frequency not switching and transmit/receive does not work. Normally, tuning takes only 2 – 4 second. Troubleshoot is to find the location of the problem on a system. In accordance with FIM 23-11 TASK 804 troubleshooting long tuning that indicates a key interlock or coupler fail can be done with the following steps: Initial testing at the cockpit to transmit to the ground station, visual check on the HF coupler in the vertical stabilizer, BITE testing in HF transceiver is to find out the trouble in the HF communication system, replace the components and the components will be brought to the workshop, and it will be tested at the workshop. After testing at the workshop, it was found that the HF coupler was damaged and during the tune in progress, a long tuning occurred. After analysis, there is a trouble in the discriminator module that is damaged so it cannot send a signal to the coupler control logic that causes long tuning. Therefore, it is necessary to change the discriminator on the HF coupler.
