Abstract

Brake lining is one component of the vehicle that serves to extend or stop the vehicle in a comfortable manner. The study object was made as an alternative material for brake lining on airplanes, because of the difficulty and length of time to get the aircraft brake linings that have low wear properties and resistant to heat. The calcium carbonate of the eggshells is suitable as the criteria as an ingredient that has a melting point of 825oC and has good physical properties, such as having low porosity and fine particles. The particle shape of eggshells is round with a smooth surface, that it is very good for workability. Therefore the author tried to raise the problem of this eggshell waste for brake pad reinforcement. The material used in this study was eggshells powder, aluminium powder, and epoxy resin as the matrix. The making of this brake lining is done by mixing all the ingredients and printing with a 60 kg, 120 kg and 180 kg load. The tests carried out include wear and hardnees tests. The brake lining material in this study was tested with variations in material content presented in the flowchart of the test. The highest (Brinell Hardness Number) is obtained at compacting load variation of 180 kg with BHN of 153,199 kgf/mm 2 and the lowest hardness value is obtained at compacting load variation of 60 kg with BHN of 78,625 kgf/mm 2 . The highest wear value in dry conditions is obtained at compacting load variation of 60 kg with value of 0.0254 mm2 /kg and the lowest wear value is obtained at compacting load variation of 180 kg with value of 0.0166 mm2 /kg. Under wet conditions, the highest wear value is obtained at compacting load variation of 60 kg with value of 0.0213 mm2 /kg while the lowest wear value is obtained at compacting load variation of 180 kg with value of 0.0135 mm2 /kg.
