Abstract

Corrosion is a condition that damages metals and causes a decrease in metal quality. Corrosion needs to be slowed down by the electroplating coating process, which is the process of applying a coating to the metal surface so as to improve the properties of the metal surface. This study aimed to investigate the effect of variations in current and electroplating time on the hardness of nickel-chrome and the corrosion resistance of steel ST60. In this study, electroplating process was done with nickel-chrome coating with currents of 2.5 A, 5 A, and 10 A with a time variation of 30 minutes and 45 minutes. After that, vickers micro hardness was tested using 100 grams of load, and corrosion media was tested by soaking the specimen for 30 days using 30% NaCl and 70% aquades. The results showed that the highest hardness values was 881.81 VHN and found in electroplating specimens of 5 A with a 30-minute time period, while the lowest hardness value was 254.32 VHN and found in the 10 A specimen with a 30-minute time period. The lowest decrease in corrosion rate was found in specimen 5 A with a 30-minute time period of 0.000332 mm/y, while the highest decrease in corrosion rate was found in specimen 10 A with a 30-minute time period of 0.000623 mm/y.
