Abstract

The manufacture of polypropylene composite reinforced with sea pandanus fiber designed to produce environmentally friendly materials, reduce costs, easily obtain material, and replace materials from relatively higher priced. The polypropylene matrix, is an ideal material with the advantage of being easy to process, lightweight, and has good mechanical properties. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the fiber volume fraction on impact strength and fracture morphological results on composites. The composites consist of random sea pandanus fibers. Sea pandan fiber is alkaline treated by dipping it into a 6% NaOH solution for 1 hour at temperatures up to 100 °C. This composite was manufactured using the compression molding method and heated at a temperature of 250 °C for 1 hour, with a volume fraction variation of 20%, 25%, 30%, 35% and 40%. Impact test specimens refer to ASTM D 6110-10 standard and using the charpy impact test. The research showed that variations in the volume fraction affected the impact strength and the morphological results of the fracture. Increasing the variation of the volume fraction increased the impact strength to a certain extent. The results showed that the highest impact strength was obtained in the 35% volume fraction of 0.0062 Joule/mm² and decreased to a variation of 40%. While the lowest impact resistance was in the 20% volume fraction of 0.0036 Joule/mm². The steps of the composite failure structures were: uneven distribution of fibers, lost of area, occurrence of air accumulation (void), and failure of fiber pull out.
