Abstract

In the SMAW welding process, weaving is one of the important parameters because it affects the fission properties which will affected the mechanical properties of the material. This study aimed to identify the comparison of the tensile strength and microstructure of ST37 steel in SMAW welding among straight, zigzag and spiral weaving. The treatment in this study was in the form of welding with the different weaving using SMAW welding with E7016 electrode and single V preparation with an angel of 60º. The variations in weaving used were straight, zigzag and spiral. The material used was ST37 steel which included in the low carbon steel group with a carbon element of less than 0.3%. The welding tensile was tested according to ASTM E8 standard and microstructure. The result indicated that the highest tensile strength occurred in spiral weaving specimens with an average value 33.94 kgf/mm². Based on the microstructure test on the welding of spiral weaving indicated the acicular ferrite microstructure which dominated the entire area and uniformly locked the grain boundary ferrite microstructure. Acicular ferrite microstructure was microstructure that was expected from each welding process because this structure was an interlocking structure that could inhibit crack progaration rate. In accordance with the results of the study it could be concluded that the difference in weaving affected the value of tensile strength and formation on the weld metal microstructure on ST37 steel
