Abstract

Composite is one of the materials that is widely used today because composites have advantages of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, small density, and a simple manufacturing process. This study used glass fiber and powder as a result of burning rice husk as reinforcement on composite materials because it is widely available. In addition, for the use of rice husk, the husk milling businessmen are currently experiencing difficulties in its destruction even though the utilization is still likely to be used as an engineering material using inexpensive adhesives and the powder from burning rice husks has the potential to be engineered in composite reinforcement. This study aimed to identify the effect of stirring speed on mechanical and morphological properties. This study used variations of stirring speed of 660 rpm, 885 rpm and 1020 rpm. The material used in this study was fiber glass WR 600 (Woven roving), powder produced by burning rice husks, and general purpose epoxy type matrix (Bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin) Bakelite EPR and hardener versamid 140. The method used in this composite manufacturing process was hand lay up. The tensile and impact test results showed that the stirring speed of 885 rpm has a more optimal value or the highest when compared to 660 rpm and 1020 rpm. The morphological test results on the composite samples of stirring speed 885 rpm indicated void, fiber breakage, and pullout fiber. This happened because in the stirring process there was air trapped in the matrix giving rise to voids in the composite, besides that it was also caused by not the maximum bond between the powder produced by burning rice husks and fiber glass as the reinforcement with the epoxic matrix.
