Abstract
Friction stir welding is an advancement in the field of friction welding. This method considered as efficient and fast welding process because it doesn’t use fillers, fluxes, and protective gas (shielding gas). One of its purposes is for the rivet substitution on plate-shaped material. In the aviation, this method can be used to connect aircraft fuselage skin material. This research was conducted to determine the effect of variations in tool material on the quality of the resulting joints and temperature characteristics, where the results of these connections will affect the rate of corrosion obtained. The material joining method is carried out by the friction stir welding process using a low carbon steel tool, a low carbon steel heat treatment tool, and a stainless steel tool, with plate-shaped specimens. After friction stir welding process and temperature’s measurement on the specimens, the specimen should be cleaned and been weighed. therefore the corrosion testing will be carried out for 14 days (336 hours) using the immersion test method with corrosive seawater as media and corrosion rate calculation using the weight loss method. The process continuea by taking a picture of microstructure to determine what type of corrosions are formed. In this study, it was found that the difference in material tool has taken effect on the material joints. the low carbon steel tools show good welding results and low carbon steel heat treatment tools show jagged welding results. The highest corrosion rate values found on specimens with stainless steel tools with an average corrosion rate of 0.3648 mpy. Corrosion formed on specimens is a type of exfoliation corrosion and the corrosion causes pits
