Abstract

Friction stir welding is an break through in the field of friction welding, this method is likely to become a welding process that will be used in the future. One of its uses is as a replacement for the rivet method on plate-shaped material. In the world of aviation this method is being used to joint skin material on aircraft fuselage. This study was conducted to determine the effect of spindle speed variations on the quality of the connection produced, where the results of these joint will determine the corrosion rate obtained. Material connection method is done by friction stir welding process using variations of spindle speed 910, 1500, and 2280 rpm with plate-shaped specimens. The results of the friction stir welding joint were carried out by dye penetrant test, after which corrosion testing for 240 hours was carried out using the immersion test method using seawater corrosive media with 3,5% NaCL and the calculation of the corrosion rate using the weight loss method. Then micro structure image was taken to determine the type of corrosion formed. In this study it was found that the amount of rpm affected the defects produced at the connection, where the higher the amount of rpm showed the better weld results and the less defects produced at the connection. Corrosion rate value produced in specimens with high rpm, namely variation of 2280 rpm has a higher corrosion resistance by getting the lowest average corrosion rate of 0.160 mdd
