Abstract

Natural fiber composites start to get serious attention from composite material researchers. Besides having high specific strengths and having low specific gravity, natural fibers are easier to obtain. This study aimed to investigate the impact strength obtained on the composite fiber of pineapple leaves immersed with a concentration of 15 % NaOH solution. The main material used was pineapple leaves fiber and the matrix used was epoxy resin. The method of manufacture was Hand lay up. The immersion of the fiber used 15 % concentration of NaOH solution for 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes and the test method used was the impact test (ASTM D 256-03). The impact test aimed to measure how much energy a material could absorb until the material breaks. The lowest impact test result was aimed at 30 minutes of immersion, namely 0,005 J/mm². While the highest impact strength occurred at 90 minutes of immersion which was 0,009 J/mm². Pineapple leaves fiber composite SEM test results showed broken dominated by the number of pull out and void fibers
