Abstract

Composite is a material that is formed from a combination of two or more forming materials through a mixture that is not homogeneous, where the mechanical properties of each forming material are different. Tensile strength is one of the important mechanical properties of composite materials that is affected by the bonding capacity of the fiber and the matrix. One that can affect the bonding capacity of the fiber and the matrix is by chemical treatment such as soaking with an alkaline solution and also more often used because it is more economical. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the time of soaking discontinue hemp fiber with polyester matrix on tensile strength. Immersion time with an alkaline solution was carried out for 0 (without immersion), 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours with 5% NaOH solution. The matrix used in this study is unsaturated polyester resin with Yukalac ® 157 BQ TN-EN with a catalyst type of Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKPO). Composites were made using the hand lay-up method at a 15% volume fraction. All specimens were dried at room temperature for approximately 24 hours. The tensile test specimen made refered to ASTM D638-90. The results showed that the highest tensile strength possessed by the fiber with immersion time with an alkaline solution at 0 hour (without immersion), i.e. 216,882 N/mm2. The composite fractures that occured with immersion time with an alkaline solution for 0 hour were fiber pull out and matrix cracking, which were more dominant in matrix cracking. In conclusion, the longer the alkali treatment of the fiber, the tensile stress of the hemp-polyester fiber composite decreases. The longer immersion time increases the number of voids because many layers of fiber are lost
