Abstract
The ground effect is the phenomenon of increasing lift and decreasing dragon wings that move close to the surface of the ground or water. Due to the low flight altitude, it is necessary to choose the engineering design of the wing profile used. One of the geometric modifications of the wing that can be done is cutting the back to make a blunt trailing edge known as a blunt/flatback profile. However, cutting the back has the disadvantage that it can change the camber and thickness of the airfoil to be modified. Another method that can be used without changing the camber and thickness of the airfoil to be modified is by adding thickness to the trailing edge of the airfoil. However, the use of these modifications needs to be carried out research or studies to determine the effect of the aerodynamic characteristics that will occur. This study examines the effect of modifying the thickness of the trailing edge airfoil on the ground effect phenomenon of the WiSE-8 winged ship. Modification of the trailing edge thickness by 1%, 2% and 3% chord. Variation of angle of attack-6⸰ to 22⸰, flight altitude of 1.5 m and cruising flight speed of 41.156 m/s with the ground surface assumed to be flat ground and moving, using the Ansys Fluent software CFD computation approach. The results obtained from this study show that there is an increase in the value of lift and drag with the addition of the trailing edge thickness. For aerodynamic efficiency, there is a decrease in the L/D value, this is because the increase in lift value is smaller than the increase in drag that is created. The induced drag value also increases with the thickness of the trailing edge and angle of attack, as well as an increase in the distribution of pressure between the WiSE 8 vehicle and the ground.
