Abstract

An Electric Ducted Fan (EDF), designed with a size of 90 mm with a thrust of 36 N in operation, will produce sound. According to the Environmental Ministry decree: KEP-48/MENLH/11/1998 concerning Noise Level Standards, there is a maximum Sound Pressure Level (SPL) value for each particular area used as are ference to determine the EDF geometry made exceeding the predetermined SPL threshold or not. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the SPL level of the designed 90 mm EDF geometry. A numerical approach by conducting independent mesh studies is used to predict noise in the form of a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) from the EDF geometry, considering ISO 3745 about receiver placement. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is used to perform acoustic simulations of the EDF. The designed EDF geometry has an SPL (dB) value of 60 dB to 88 dB at frequencies ≈2600 Hz. While the SPL (dBA) is obtained from 74 dBA to 103 dBA at the lower frequency is ≈2240 Hz and the upper frequency is ≈2800 Hz. Theoverall value of SPL (dB) from 20 receivers is 97,66863 dB, and the overall SPL(dBA) is 112,56894 dBA. The receiver location affects the SPL results due to differences in pressure, density, and distance from the sound source.
