Abstract
In the manufacturing industry the selection of appropriate machinery and tools help the company for convenience, cost savings and speed of work, especially in the finishing process. In the finishing process it takes a process that does not change the basic shape and size of the workpiece. The sandblasting process is suitable because this process large and complicated workpieces can be done easily and quickly. Sandblasting is a metal work process in which abrasive material is fired into the surface of the material with high pressure. In this research, the sandblasting process was carried out on Aluminum 4030 by varying the size of the sand grains into 40 mesh, 60 mesh, and 80 mesh with the variation of 30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 90 seconds. The different grain sizes and times generated different surface hardness. The biggest hardness in sandblasting with a grain size of 40 mesh for 90 seconds was 39.8 VHN, 60 mesh was 30 seconds was 38.6 VHN, and 80 mesh for 30 seconds was 37.1 VHN. From the results of the micro photos, the largest material defects occured in the grain size of 40 mesh. If the size of the sand grain used was small then the resulting surface defects were small too.
