Abstract

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a welding process invented at TWI (The Welding Institute) by Wayne Thomas in 1991. Daily applications of Friction Stir Welding are still being developed, such as tool design variations, welding technique improvements and new tool material improvements to extend the tool life. The selection of the right FSW parameters can increase the strength of the joint and minimize welding defects. The research method carried out in this research is the bending strength test with the three point bending method and the macro photo test on the results of the friction stir welding connection using variations in the diameter of the shoulder tool 12 mm, 15 mm, and 18 mm. The results of the bending strength test of the FSW connection after processing the research data obtained results for variations with a shoulder diameter of 12 mm having the highest bending strength of 319.15 N/mm2, which is close to the raw material of 382.13 N/mm2. In the 15 mm shoulder diameter variation, the bending strength value is 292.19 N/mm2, while the lowest bending strength is obtained at the 18 mm shoulder diameter variation, which is 257.75 N/mm2. The results of macro photos on variations in the diameter of the 12 mm, 15 mm, and 18 mm shoulder tools used have defects that occur along the connection path at the bottom of the welding area or stir zone, this happens because the height or length of the tool used is not appropriate or less of the thickness of the workpiece with a thickness of 5 mm.
