Abstract

An airplane structural strength is depend on its structural design and its material strength. Horizontal stabilizer is part of the empennage of the airplane that works to maintain the lateral stability of the airplane. Therefore, the horizontal stabilizer is very important to maintain the flight stability of the airplane. The purposes of this thesis are to design the internal structural of the horizontal stabilizer and to analyse its structural strength of STTA-12 MXA airplane. CATIA V5R21 is the software that being used to this design and analyse the horizontal stabilizer structure. The analyse method that being used at this thesis is structural static analyse by CATIA V5R21 with three conditional loads which are steady horizontal flight/cruising condition, turning performance/banking at 60°condition, and pull-up manoeuvre condition. The results from this thesis are the horizontal stabilizer structure configuration with front and rear spar at 25% and 60% of the chord line, 5 mm of thickness at each part, four parts of rib structure with 4 mm of thickness at each and 1 mm size of skin thickness. The maximum stress occur at the rib structure of the horizontal stabilizer root with 33.6 MPa at steady pull-up manoeuvre condition. The value of margin of safety at steady level flight/cruising condition is 39.54, therefore the structure is in the safe condition. The MS value for turning performance condition is 39.92, therefore the structure is in the safe condition. The MS value for steady pull-up manoeuvre condition is 9.26 therefore the structure is in the safe condition
