Abstract

Sandwich composites are one of the material options that are starting to be used frequently in several industries including the aviation industry because sandwich composites have high stiffness and strength with light weight. This study aims to determine the mechanical strength of glass fiber sandwich composites with foam cores against bending strength based on variations in core thickness and the number of layers on the composite sandwich skin. The research begins with the process of making glass fiber sandwich composites with polyfoam cores using hand lay up and vacuum bagging methods with variations in core thickness of 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm and variations in the number of 1 layer, 2 layers and 3 layers of the composite sandwich skin. Then the sandwich composite is cut to size for the bending test on ASTM C 393. The results of the bending test obtained an increase in bending strength in the direction of the increase in core thickness and the number of layers on the sandwich composite skin where in the sandwich composite with a core thickness of 5 mm and the number of 1 layer on the skin, the amount of bending load that can be resisted is 25 N, then the amount of bending load that is retainedability increased to 62.2 N in sandwich composites with a core thickness of 10 mm and the number of 2 layers on the skin and then increased to 118.4 N in sandwich composites with a core thickness of 15 mm and a total of 3 layers on the skin
