Abstract
Composite is a new arrangement of materials in which two or more constituent elements with different physical and chemical properties are combined into a single element to produce new properties that should provide better properties. In this study, the load reinforcement consists of carbon particles from the burning of rice husks. This research focused on the volume fraction of particle addition with variations of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% over a 100 mesh size using hand lay-up method to produce composites. This study aimed to investigate the tensile strength, impact resistance and fracture morphology using SEM photographs. From the results of the tensile tests, the highest resistance was obtained for a volume fraction of 2% with a tension value of 30,930 MPa and the lowest resistance was at volume fraction of 8% with a value of tensile stress of 20,912 MPa. Then, in the impact test, the highest resistance was obtained with a volume fraction of 4% with an impact value of 0.00506 Joules/mm2 , while the lowest impact resistance was found with a volume fraction of 8% with an impact value of 0.00013 Joules/mm2 . This proves that the addition of carbon particles to the rice husk affects the tensile strength and impact resistance of polyester matrix composites.
