Abstract
Welding is a metal joining method. One of the metals that is widley used is Alumunium Alloy 4030. The application of this materials is for aircraft materials, ships, vessels, tanks, construction, and other in the assembly process. In addition, Alumunium Alloy 4030 is applied in material connecting by welding. The welding method used in this research was TIG welding with ER 5356 filler. Before the welding process was conducted, preheat process was applied with the temperature variations of 75°C, 125°C, and 175°C. After that, the result of welding process were tested in terms of three points of views : the tensile test, hardness test, and microstructure. The results of the research in the weld area showed that preheat 175 ° C gave a maximum tensile stress result of 72.55 kg / mm2, with a yield stress of 43.29 kg / mm2 . In the hardness test of weld area, the preheat temperature increase did not significantly effect the hardness value of 45.8 kgf / mm2 - 47.5 kgf /mm2 . This was due to the reduced distortion and cooling rate during the welding process. The research also indicated that before preheat the alumunium microstructure was smaller and after preheat the alumunium microstructure was bigger.
