Abstract

Composite with structural laminate type is a combination of two or more lamina (one sheet of composite with a certain fiber direction) that forms an integral structural element in the composite. Acrylic is a kind of hard plastic that resembles glass, but has properties that make it more eminent than glass, which is stronger, more flexible and not easily broken compared to glass, making it safer. Thus, a comparison of the mechanical properties test and also the workmanship costs of each material is carried out, to be known the results of the test and also the costs incurred for the working of each material. To find out the mechanical properties of acrylic and composite, tensile test will be carried out based on ASTM D 3039 and ASTM D 638, then bending test are carried out based on ASTM D 7264 and ASTM D 790. Furthermore, the cost of working acrylic and composite specimens will be calculated and compared. After tensile and bending tests on both specimens and then processing data, the highest average tensile strength was obtained by a composite with 5 layers fiber glass, which was 330.98 MPa and the highest average bending strength was owned by a composite with 5 layers fiber glass, which was 64.51 MPa. And for spending on the cost of working on specimen, acrylic requires less cost than composite specimen 5 layers of fiber glass and composite 4 layers fiber glass, with the price of acrylic per cm3 is Rp. 106.666 / cm3. Thus it can be concluded that in terms of strength and stiffness, composite with 5 layers of fiber glass more eminent than acrylic and acrylic is more eminent in spending on manufacturing costs.
