Abstract
Joining is a method used to connect two or more materials into one. There are several joining methods which are often carried out especially in composite materials, including Mechanical method, adhesive bonding and a combination of both, of the three methods, the use of media is different. For mechanical methods using rivets, bolts or pins, while for adhesive bonding, use chemical liquid as the connecting medium. In the adhesive bonding method, the use of different types of adhesives and the thickness of different adhesives will result in adhesion strength to different composite materials. This research was focused on analyzing the strength of the results of the single lap joint connection with the adhesive bonding method which varied the type of adhesive and its adhesive thickness. The connection treatment of the material is adhesive bonding single lap joint. The process of adhesive bonding is carried out by using variations of adhesive bonding, namely epoxy, polyester and liycal, then re-testing by varying the thickness of the adhesive with variations in thickness of 0.5 mm, 0.75 mm and 1 mm. The specimens used in this study were composite materials with a composition of 3 layer fiber glass woven roving fiber 600 and epoxy resin. The results of testing the variation of the type of epoxy adhesive have the highest average value, compared to variations in the types of adhesive polyester and lycal, with an average value of 38.8 Mpa. As well as adhesive bonding with variations in adhesive thickness, the highest strength occurred at a thickness of 0.5 mm adhesive with an average stress value of 38.8 Mpa, compared with other adhesive thicknesses of 0.75 mm with adhesive strength of 29.18 Mpa and 1 mm at 26.65 Mpa. It can be interpreted that adhesive bonding with epoxy variations and 0.5 mm thickness has a stronger adhesive strength compared to other types and thicknesses of adhesive bonding.
