Abstract
The main source for electricity in Indonesia comes from non-renewable energy power plants, which are increasingly limited in availability. Under these conditions, it is necessary to use wind energy as a solution instead of fossil as electrical energy where the equipment used is wind turbines. This research was conducted to find out how the variations in wind turbines affect the performance generated. The research was conducted by designing, producing, testing directly to get real data (including wind speed, turbine rotation, voltage and current) and recapitulating data to obtain the final results (in the form of output power, efficiency and tip speed ratio). Tests were carried out on an American multi-blade horizontal axis wind turbine prototype by varying the angle of the blade (10°, 15°, 20° and 25°) and the area of the blade (1,2 m, 1,3 m and 1,4 m in diameter) where the blade used was linear tapered and made from acrylic. Based on the test results and test data recapitulation, it can be seen that the highest value for the output power parameter is generated by a wind turbine with the 20° angle blade and a diameter of 1,4 m with a value of 4,733 Watt. The highest values for efficiency parameters and tip speed ratio were generated by wind turbines with the 25° angle blade and a diameter of 1,4 m where the values of each of these parameters were 14,412% and 3,9. Overall, the average parameter increased with the increasing value in blade angle and area, although it is not significant, while the decrease in the value that occurs in the output power parameter is due to the effect of the input power where the size of the turbine blade caused the air speed through the turbine to decrease which also causes a drop in input power.
