Abstract
A suitable substitute for metal is a composite material. Composites are lighter than metals but have high resistance to corrosion due to non-metallic composites. The manufacturing process is relatively simple and inexpensive. A composite material is a material made up of at least two types of materials which have different physical properties, namely as a filler or reinforcement and a matrix as a binder. In this study, the test used coconut coir and the matrix used was a PP plastic sheet which was tested using bending and SEM tests. The bending strength test of the coir composite has the highest strength value, which is the fiber composition of 40%. While the lowest composition is 10%, it can be concluded that the greater the presentation of the volume fraction of coconut fibers, the higher the flexural strength values will be due to the increasing number of binders of matrix between fibers. Meanwhile, the flexural strength of pure polypropylene without its own mixture was evaluated at 40 MPa. From the above results, it can be concluded that the mixture of polypropylene and coir composite materials has a higher value than pure polyropylene, so it can be said that the mixture of polypropylene and coir can improve the flexural strength properties of pure polypropylene.
