Abstract
The utilization and use of natural fiber is increasingly being used. One of them is the use of natural fiber as an alternative to glass fiber for the needs of the automotive, shipping and even aviation industries and the advantages of using natural fiber are low density, corrosion resistance, environmentally friendly, easily decomposed, and recyclable as well as relatively low production costs. This study aims to determine the maximum value of fiber volume fraction on the tensile strength and impact properties of hybrid composites reinforced with pineapple leaf fiber and coconut husk fiber matric polyester resin using the hand lay-up method. The materials used are pineapple leaf fiber and coconut husk fiber with polyester resin matrix and MEKPO catalyst. The process carried out is by randomly arranging pineapple leaf fiber and coconut husk fiber with a fiber length of 10mm in each variation of volume fractions of 20%, 30% and 40%. Tensile and impact test specimens and procedures refer to ASTM D638-14 and ASTM D6110-08 standards. The results of thsis study show that the higher the addition of fiber volume fraction, the tensile strength will decrease. The lowest tensile strength is found in the volume fraction of 40% (specimen 3) 60% polyester resin which is 10.26 MPa and the highest tensile strength in volume fraction 20% (specimen 1) 80% polyester resin which is 19.88 MPa. The higher the addition of the fiber volume fraction will increase the impact strength of the composite. The highest impact strength is found in the volume fraction of 40% (specimen 3) of 60% polyester resin which is 0.041 J/mm2 and the lowest impact strength in volume fraction of 20% (specimen 1) 80% of polyester resin which is 0.034 J/mm2.
