Abstract

In the aeromodeling industry, the use of nitromethane fuel which is commonly used has several disadvantages, such as high cost and limited availability. Therefore, this study aims to find a more efficient and readily available alternative fuel for the OS 15 engine used in the F2 aeromodeling model aircraft. Previous research has shown that a mixture of methanol and castor oil has potential as a promising alternative fuel. However, more in-depth research is needed to analyze the effect of such blends on engine performance and fuel consumption. The main objective of this study is to analyze the impact of a blend of methanol and castor oil as an alternative fuel on the OS 15 engine in an aeromodeling F2 model aircraft. This study aims to see the effect of the blend on engine performance in terms of RPM and thrust, as well as fuel consumption. This research used an experimental method conducted at UKM Aeromodeling, Adisutjipto Institute of Aerospace Technology. A randomized complete block design (RAL) was used in data collection, and the data were analyzed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The results showed that the methanol-castor oil blend with a 6:1 ratio had competitive performance against 30% nitromethane fuel in terms of RPM and thrust. In addition, this blend also offers better fuel consumption by 26.95%. MANOVA tests confirmed significant differences in all dependent variables, signaling the potential of this blend as an efficient alternative to reduce nitromethane usage.
