Abstract

Hybrid composites are materials composed of two or more materials as reinforcement. This study uses a fiberglass Chopper Strand Mat (CSM) with variations of natural fibers from rice stalks and corn silk. This study aims to determine how to manufacture fiberglass hybrid composites with the hand lay-up method, bending strength and resistance of the specimen to fire resistance with variations in fiber volume fraction of 10%, 15% and 20%. In the bending test based on ASTM D 7264M-07 and carried out as many as 5 specimens for each volume fraction and the burn test based on ASTM D 635- 05 carried out as many as 10 specimens for each volume fraction. The bending test obtained the highest bending stress value at 20% volume fraction with an average value of 72.203 MPa, the highest elastic modulus value was found in the 20% volume fraction with an average of 8 GPa and the highest strain value was found in the 10% volume fraction with an average 0.045 mm/mm average. While the burn test was carried out as many as 10 specimens for each volume fraction. The highest Time to Ignation (TTI) value was found in the 10% volume fraction, which was 120.2 seconds and the lowest was in the 15% specimen with a value of 102.3333 seconds. The highest value of Burning Rate (BR) is found in the volume fraction of 20%, namely 14.49 mm/minute and the lowest value is found in the volume fraction of 10%, which is 11.09571 mm/minute.
