Abstract

Some of the car body industries have experienced problems with welded joints, one of which is CV. Laksana which has a problem with the bus chassis, namely the occurrence of breaks in the weld joint area. The material used for the bus chassis frame is galvanized steel. It is low carbon steel because it has a carbon content of 0.0725%. Welding in this bus chassis connection uses MIG (metal inert gas) welding. To get good welding the process must apply standard operating procedures correctly. This study was intended to analyse the effects of MIG welding current on the tensile strength, hardness, and microstructure of galvanized steel. The results of this study indicated that the average value of the highest tensile strength was at the current of 120 amperes, namely 35.99 kgf/mm2 . In addition, the average value of the highest hardness was at the current of 140 amperes as 198.75 VHN. Meanwhile, from the microstructure test, it could be seen that at the the current of 140 amperes there were solid and irregular elements of pearlite and ferrite. The results of this study indicated that the welding current was very influential on the tensile strength and hardness.
