Abstract

Composite is a new material arrangement in which two or more constituent elements that have different physical and chemical properties are combined into one to generate new properties that are expected to provide the better ones. In this study, the reinforcement that functions as a filler is corn cob charcoal where this research focuses on the volume fraction of the addition of particles with variations of 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12% at a particle size of 100 mesh using the hand lay-up method to generate composites. This study aims to analyze the bending and impact strength. From the results of the bending test, the highest strength was obtained at the volume fraction of 4% with a stress value of 34.58 MPa while the lowest strength was found in a variation of 12% with a value of 12.64 MPa. Meanwhile, in the impact test, the highest strength was obtained in the volume fraction of 12% with a value of 0.0429 Joule/mm2 , while the lowest strength was in the volume fraction of 4% with a value of 0.0367 J/mm2 . The highest absorption energy value was generated by the variation of the 12% particle volume fraction with 6.667 J, while at 0% variation, the lowest impact strength value was 5.767 J. This proved that the addition of corn cob charcoal particles affected the bending strength and the impact on the composite reinforced epoxy.
