Abstract

Cooling tower is a device that have a function to cool water or fluids with air as the cooling medium. Cooling tower is defined as a fluid heat exchanger which works to cool water by have in contact with the air so that it evaporates a small part of the water. PVC pipe as a filler has O 3/4 inch of diameter. The use of O 3/4 inch PVC pipe and height variations in the height of the filler material are expected to break up the flow of water, so that the water and air contact becomes longer and is expected to increase the value of range, approach, effectiveness, and cooling capacity on the mini cooling tower. The purpose of this study was to determine the result of the range , approach, maximum effectiveness of the mini cooling tower, and the maximum cooling capacity of the mini cooling tower. The cooling tower used 43 cm x 30 cm x 93 cm. The variation of fill used 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm. The water temperature was around 50 C and the fill was PVC pipe pieces O 3/4 inch. From the test results, the range was at a height variation of 40 cm, which was 10 C and range at a height variation of 10 cm was 4.3 C. The approach found at a height variation of 40 cm at 14°C and the approach found at a height variation of 10 cm at 19.9 C. The best effectiveness value found in the 40 cm height variation of 41.7% and the best cooling capacity value found at the 40 cm height variation of 1.89 kj/s. From the results of the study, it found that the filler material greatly influenced the performance of the cooling tower. The fewer piles of filler material and the lower the height of the filler material, yielded the lower cooling tower.
