Abstract

The need for energy increases along with the increase in human activities that using fuel, especially the fuel oil obtained from plant and animal fossils. The economy will be affected by the consumption of fossil fuels while the users sometimes do not believe that fossil fuels are non-renewable so that biomass energy is developed which becomes an alternative energy, such as bio briquettes. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of the characteristics of briquettes from coconut shells and corn cobs which affect the moisture content, ash content, density, and calorific value. This study employed an experimental method with a variety of ingredients with a percentage of 30% coconut shell: 60% corncob: 10% tapioca flour, 50% coconut shell: 40% corn cob: 10% tapioca flour, and70% coconut shell: 20% corn cob: 10% tapioca flour. The results showed that the 70% briquette variation Coconut shell: 20%Corncobs: 10% tapioca flour had the best briquette characteristics with a moisture content value of 5.55%, an ash content value of 7.73%, a density value of 0.772g/cm3, and a calorific value of 6199.32 cal/g. In conclusion, the more content of coconut shells further improves the quality of the briquettes.
