Abstract

Composites are material structures composed of two or more constituents macroscopically combined without dissolving each other. They are composed of a reinforcing phase and a matrix and have the advantages of better strength-to density ratio and corrosion resistance, which makes them an alternative to the increasingly scarce and increasingly used metals. Therefore, alternative materials such as composites are increasingly being developed these days, especially for the manufacture of helmets. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the volume fraction of wood powder particles on the bending strength and impact strength of composite materials. The particle volume fraction variations used were 10%, 15% and 20%. The materials used in this research are sawdust particles mixed with epoxy resin as a matrix. The material manufacturing process was done by hand lay-up technique. In the impact test, the test results show that the 20% volume fraction provides the highest impact strength with a value of 0.10249 J/mm², while the 10% volume fraction provides the lowest impact strength with a value of 0.06124 J/mm². In addition, in the bending test, the 10% volume fraction gave the highest bending strength with a value of 32.457 N/mm², while the 20% volume fraction gave the lowest bending strength with a value of 11.900 N/mm². These results indicated that the addition of sawdust particles affected the bending and impact strength of composites using epoxy matrices.
